About Carolyn
Carolyn is a lawyer with almost 20 years’ experience advancing women and girls' rights. She is a social entrepreneur, a tech evangelist, a filmmaker, a girl expert, and the founder of Girls Voices Initiative, a non-profit that educates and empowers girls and women to identify their voices and use it to advocate for their rights; and uses technology and digital media to amplify their voices to wide audiences, particularly policy makers and other influencers. Her non-profit educates adolescent girls and women about their rights and provides digital literacy and empowerment skills to girls and women and facilitates their creation of technology applications and resources to strengthen their advocacy. Carolyn is a TechWomen Fellow, Women Leader of the World Fellow, a World Pulse Ambassador and an Advanced Digital Changemaker innovating creative programmes that empower girls and women in Nigeria.
Carolyn was recently named on the 2021 FemiList 100 and on the top 21 Women Leaders to Watch in 2021. She has been named in Nigeria’s 20 Most Innovative Women in Tech, the 50 Most Outstanding Female Pacesetters in Africa, and Nigeria’s 100 Women in Tech. As an award-winning filmmaker, her films and documentaries have screened in over 23 film festivals, including the Toronto International Women’s Film Festivals and the Los Angeles International Women’s Film Festival. Under her leadership, her organisation won the 2019 With and For Girls Award for the Most Disruptive Girl-Led Nonprofit in Sub-Saharan Africa and the 2020 BPeace Women Forward Global Award for the Next Generation Workplace 2020 Gold Winner. Representing her organization in a regional capacity, Carolyn is a member of the Civil Society Organisations Reference Group to the African Union Campaign to End Child Marriage, she is a member of the Africa Action Group to End Child Marriage convened by Girls Not Brides, and at the national level, she is the Co-Chair of the Coalition of Civil Society to End Child Marriage in Nigeria. Her work has impacted over 800,000 adolescent girls and continues to build a vibrant girls’ rights movement. She is a firm believer of the quote that, ‘Girls are truly a force for change on the planet’ and she believes that ‘technology and digital media help the voices of girls and women reach multitudes for change, when their strength to shout is frail’.
